"The stages" of food:
In the hospital after surgery, you will be on a very strict diet and it varies based on your procedure. The first thing that will happen when you can eat is the doctors will start with food such as popsicles, soup, toast or ice cream. They like to start with these because they are easy to digest and will be easy on your body. This helps make sure that you do not get sick and will help ease your body back into food.
The next step is typically a soft food diet. This is mainly food like bread, pasta, pancakes and sometimes pizza. These foods are the next step up because they are more like a meal but are still soft. This is again to ease your body back into regular food. These foods are also usually bland so they will not upset your stomach like some spicy food might.
The next step would be going to food like chicken and different kinds of meat. This is usually when you are out of the hospital and on your own. The only thing to stay away from, for awhile in my opinion, is spicy food.
After about a week (or whatever your doctor says) is when you can start eating spicy food and going back to your normal diet.
Of course, this all depends on your procedure and body. Make sure you listen to your body and doctors during this process.
When you get out of the hospital:
Once you get out of the hospital, still make sure you watch what you eat. Stick more to bland foods -- it can't hurt you to be extra safe. I know this from personal experience. One time after I had been in the hospital for a long time, I was finally allowed to leave. I had been sticking to bland food, but the doctors said I could eat whatever I wanted to eat (in moderation). So, I went to a restaurant and ordered buffalo shrimp. After I ate it, I felt sick and went to the bathroom and threw up everywhere. From then on, I realized that I needed to stay away from spicy food when I left the hospital. Remember, even though the doctors say it is ok, you never know how your stomach will react.
